Reading Specialist

Job Goal:

The Reading Specialist provides guidance, support, and instruction to students, families and staff. The Reading Specialist acts as a researcher, mentor and resource to staff. The Reading Specialist will provide interventions and supports to ensure that certain identified students have the opportunity to be successful in reading.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master of Education in Reading
  • Valid Pennsylvania teaching certification in Special Education and Reading Specialist
  • Child Abuse Clearance; Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Clearance
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Research programs school psychologists or parents have requested/suggested. Find the applicability to the cyber school environment.
  •  Assess students as requested within the special education department.
  • Assess students as required as part of the IAT process.
  • Recommend reading programs and strategies to students, families, and staff as requested.
  • Participate as a member of the IAT or IEP teams as requested by the teams.
  • Participate in the school wide child study/RTII process.
  • Pilot a program of specialized reading instruction (remediation)
  • Attend remedial program trainings and seminars to become more familiar with programs like Wilson, Barton and other Orton-Gillingham programs.
  • Monitor current remedial reading programs. Research and develop innovative remedial reading programs.
  • Create, implement, and monitor a reading progress monitoring procedure.
  • Collaborate with the elementary team.
  • Serve as an LEA
  • Train staff on data, reading remediation, reading programs, and progress monitoring
  • Attend admissions events as directed
  • Attend all special education trainings and department wide meetings
  • Perform any additional duties as deemed necessary by the Assistant Director and/or Director of Special Education.
Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
