Looking for Ways to Keep Your Kid Busy This Summer? Here’s Your Go-to Guide
June 3, 2026
Summer break brings long days, extra free time, and eventually cries of “I’m bored!” Whether you're staying home, heading out on a road trip, or exploring your own neighborhood, the PA Cyber Charter School has ideas for fun ways to keep kids of all ages engaged and learning all summer long.
While summer is a time to relax and recharge, it can also contribute to the “summer slide,” a dip in academic progress that can affect students during extended breaks. Research shows that on average, students’ test scores flatten or drop during the summer. With a little creativity and structure, families can help prevent that slide, keep kids engaged, and embrace all the fun and flexibility that summer has to offer.
PA Cyber families are encouraged to explore the school’s annual summer activities catalog. Exciting summer opportunities, including clubs, field trips, and summer camps, offer plenty of ways for students of all age groups to connect with classmates and have fun both online and in person all summer long. Every spring, check Buzz or your PA Cyber-issued email for details.
Below are more ideas to curb boredom and help your child make the most of summer.
Rainy Day Activities (No screen required!)
Get lost in a book: Summer is the perfect time to nurture the habit of reading. Create a cozy reading nook at home and schedule regular trips to your local library to let family members pick out books that excite them. (Here are some favorites from the indie bestseller lists.)
Start a mini STEM challenge: Turn your kitchen table into a science lab. Try paper airplane competitions, buoyancy tests with household items, or a simple AI activity. Bonus points for keeping a journal to track discoveries!
Create a DIY maker station: Gather markers, felt, scissors, and glue, along with household “extras” such as bottle lids, buttons, and shipping boxes as they arrive. Keep these accessible and encourage kids to design something new. If they need a jumpstart, provide a prompt or challenge, for example: “Create something you can use around the house.”

Sunny Day Adventures
Plan a picnic and let the kids create the menu: Head to a local park or your backyard for a picnic and involve your child in the prep by having them plan the meal. They can write out a menu, draw place cards, and give each dish a creative name.
Host a lemonade stand or bake sale: Encourage entrepreneurial spirit by letting your child organize a small summer sale. Consider donating some of the proceeds to a local cause they care about, or saving up for school supplies.
Come together for a family volunteer day: Give back to the community by volunteering at a food pantry or having your kids lead a small food drive.

Road Trip-Ready Ideas
Pick a podcast: For long trips, check out recommendations from PA Cyber’s Ear Buds Podcast Club, such as Smash Boom Best, Stuff You Should Know, or Dorktales Storytime. Take it a step further by challenging kids to each come up with three questions they would ask their hero if they were hosting their own podcast.
Make a travel journal: Encourage your child to document highlights of your trip, with drawings, reflections, or glued-in brochures. It’s part creative writing, part memory book.
Create a family playlist: Have everyone add their favorite songs to a shared playlist, then take turns as DJ. Use the songs as a jumping-off point for fun stories or road trip games such as Name that Tune.
Around the Neighborhood
Take the family walk to the next level: Create a neighborhood scavenger hunt or have your child draw different walking routes and take turns as the “trail guide” for your family.
Set up a community swap box: Collect books, puzzles, or games that your family no longer uses and set up a swap box for neighbors. Let your child decorate the box and manage the “inventory.”
Start a sidewalk art gallery: Grab chalk and let your child turn the sidewalk into a creative canvas. They can draw scenes from books, write messages, or create puzzles for neighbors to solve.

Summer is a season full of potential — for creativity, connection, and curiosity.
