A Day With PA Cyber and the State Capitol
Emily Werley
On November 14, 2023, our PA Cyber Advocacy Families had the opportunity to visit the Pennsylvania State Capitol. During our visit, we went on a tour, listened as Senator Vogel presented, engaged with our local legislators, and, most importantly, advocated for public cyber charter schools.
We started the day by meeting our families at our Harrisburg Regional Office. As a cyber school, connecting with our families in person is always a joy! From there, we shuttled to the State Capitol.
Upon arrival, we took a guided tour of the Capitol. We dove into the building's history; saw the Supreme Court, House, and Senate Chamber; admired the Rotunda; and appreciated the artwork and architecture. One highlight from this part of the tour was meeting and taking pictures with Senator Elder Vogel.
Following lunch, we proceeded to the Senate Chambers where a session was in progress. Senator Vogel graciously acknowledged our presence during the introduction.
We then visited the offices of our families' legislators. During these visits, our families passionately advocated for cyber charter schools and explained how PA Cyber is an excellent fit for their families. If they could not speak to the Legislators directly, we engaged with the office staff or left behind a personal message for their legislator. This time was very significant to us because of the implications of House Bill 1422.
Concluding our eventful day, we boarded the bus back to our Harrisburg office. Our visit to the State Capitol had a lasting impact on the families and staff who attended. In addition to gaining valuable insights into the Capitol, we were honored to advocate for our school community. This experience was not only educational but also incredibly inspiring.
